The chain stopper is one of the essential parts of the anchor handling arrangement made as a piece of a strong chain. One end is fixed to a deck pad-eye or bollard, while the other end is fitted with a hook and is connected to the anchor chain link.
The stopper ensures reliable ship’s anchorage in the harbour and prevents inadvertent anchor chain slippage (slackening). The stopper is used to secure the anchor chain at anchorage and to ensure tight anchor positioning in the hawse hole in order to avoid its displacement at roll.
